Laying the Foundations of Community Engagement

Welcome to Module 1!

Message to Learners

Welcome to the ODE Community Engagement Professional Learning Series! This series consists of four online modules. These modules will help you better understand the impacts and potential of community engagement on students and families as well as plan for how to strengthen community engagement in your district. We will use these guiding questions throughout the modules:

- What are your needs in planning for and executing powerful engagement for your local context?
- How can you ensure that your engagement is fully inclusive and representative of the focal student populations you serve?
- How will using an equity lens help create conditions for authentic community engagement?

Each module is self-paced and will take approximately 45-90 minutes to complete. The content will include a variety of videos, audio, activities, and text.

**Learning Goals**
Course Outline

Module 2: Levels of the Community Engagement Spectrum Learning Goals Participants will delve into the levels of community engagement. Participants will reflect on prior district level engagement efforts. Particpants will explore methods of purposeful inclusion. Participants will identify focal groups and partners with whom they would like to strengthen engagement.
Module 3: Examples, Tools, and Strategies Learning Goals Participants will expand on their approach to community engagement by developing inclusive practices. Participants will study the concepts of deep hospitality and reciprocity and consider how to implement those concepts more thoroughly in their community. Particpants will consider the potential of utilizing ODE surveys and how to effectively and inclusively gather responses. Participants will examine strategies to navigate competing community interests while mitigating harm.
Module 4: Reflecting on Lessons Learned and Committing to Ongoing Community Engagement Learning Goals Participants will reflect on Modules 1, 2, and 3, and analyze their district’s ongoing inclusive vision for authentic community engagement. Participants will consider how powerful communities are created through a strong sense of belonging at the intersection of inclusion, equity, and diversity. Particpants will identify the concerns created by isolated or siloed engagement. Participants will finalize their plans for the current school year and determine how to maintain momentum for the years to come.
