Module 2 Overview

Welcome to Module 2. With this module, we begin the process of going deeper into each element of the Feedback Loop that you were introduced to in Module 1.

The focus of Module 2 is Learning Goals and Success Criteria. These two elements anchor the process of formative assessment. You will be learning about why Learning Goals and Success Criteria are essential in formative assessment and you will practice creating them. To support your learning, you will be seeing examples of teachers using Learning Goals and Success Criteria in several videos throughout the module. We then move into Success Criteria and ask you to begin sharing and co-constructing Success Criteria with students.

We begin this work, intentionally, with Learning Goals and Success Criteria because we have found that these concepts build on teachers’ foundation knowledge of lesson planning. In week 2, you will be introduced to the concept of Building Blocks and more deeply explore planning for formative assessment.

OFAST includes two weeks (weeks 3 and 4) in which teachers plan, implement, and get feedback on their application of the concepts that are taught in each module. As you begin week 3, give yourself time to review the new content and to consider how you will approach teaching using Learning Goals and co-constructing Success Criteria. You will also want to get feedback from at least one colleague about your plan, though you can reach out to other colleagues as well. Or, if you are taking the course with colleagues who teach the same grade level and content, you can also collaboratively plan a lesson and collectively reflect on what is different for teachers, and for students, during this lesson.

While several of the planning elements in Module 2 may feel familiar to you, pay attention to how these ideas are a) woven together and b) used directly with students. This module might just change how you think about instructional planning.
