Essential Disciplinary Practice Alignment

This section models activities related to the following Essential Disciplinary Practice (EDP):

EDP 3 - Collect, interpret, evaluate and apply information from primary and secondary sources to better understand and create historical narratives, distinguishing between fact and opinion.

Let’s get started! In this section, we provide grounding vocabulary and an activation activity to get you thinking about youth civic engagement, an integral concept in this module. An activation activity is a pedagogical strategy designed to engage students at the beginning of a lesson by tapping into their existing knowledge, sparking their interest and actively connecting them to the new material being presented.

Please read the definition on each flip card. Each word or phrase is a key concept from the updated 2024 Social Science Standards that you will interact with throughout this module. As you read the definitions, begin to consider how these concepts might relate to social science education.

Advocacy

The process of supporting or promoting a cause, policy or group to influence decisions and create social change.

Civic Engagement

Individual or collective actions that make a difference in one’s community or address a public issue.

Community

A group of individuals who are connected through geography, interests, values or experiences and form relationships and a sense of belonging through shared experiences, mutual support and common goals.

Equity

In social science contexts, it often refers to ensuring that communities or individuals receive support based on their different needs or abilities to achieve fair outcomes.

Injustice

The unfair or discriminatory treatment of individuals or groups, resulting in a violation of their rights or denial of opportunities.

Justice

The fair treatment of all individuals, ensuring everyone has access to the same rights and opportunities regardless of their background or identity.

Extension Activity

The youth in this photograph were participating in a May 19, 2016, walkout at Forest Grove High School in Forest Grove, Oregon, following racially charged incidents on campus. That day, thousands of students at schools across Oregon walked out in support of #StandUpFG, the hashtag Latinx youth activists at Forest Grove High School used to represent their movement. Students were protesting both the racist and xenophobic incidents that occurred at Forest Grove and the administrators’ minimal response to the incidents.
