Check Your Understanding

You will now read through a scenario where you, as a school staff member (teacher, counselor or administrator), are approached by a student to discuss a recent struggle they had in class. Each question will present you with options where you need to practice active listening, and empathy, navigating difficult conversations across differences and affirming perspectives. (You will be prompted to respond at different points in the scenario through the ungraded quiz.)

Context:

You are a school staff member (teacher, counselor or administrator). A student, Alex, approaches you after class looking frustrated and hesitant. You notice their body language—arms crossed, eyes downcast—suggesting discomfort or uncertainty. After a pause, Alex finally says:

"I tried to share my thoughts during the discussion today, but I felt like no one really responded. It was like I was speaking a different language. Then later, when someone else said something similar, everyone reacted like it was new or interesting."

At this point, you will choose how to respond based on the prompts below.
